This vessel is from the Nagareru series. Taken from the Japanese word for flowing, this series of work is meant to be a balance between two forces. The rough texture of the piece represents the more volatile activities of nature like volcanic, tectonic, and erosion while the smooth circles show the calmer moments like growth, stillness, and serenity. It is the contrast between the two that is sought by the final piece. Rectangular in structure, the piece is cut open in three ports to house different floral arrangements. This ceramic stoneware vessel is high fired with custom glazes manipulated to create various effects. There are imperfections and many small moments of happenstance creating the balance sought.
